I played the tuba at school but drumming just seemed far cooler. I pestered my parents to let me start lessons until one day they finally gave in.
In total, 13 years but initially it was very off and on.
I love the kit I currently play which is a Mapex ProM, I am always getting a lot of good feedback on how good it sounds. I have also owned Yamaha kits and again, they play well and sound great. One day I would like to own a DW Collectors Series or Spaun Kit, but until I get an endorsement or win the lottery, I’ll keep dreaming.
Alain and the tutors are really approachable, friendly and prepared to go out of their way to help. I regularly attend masterclasses. Some schools pack out halls with anything from 50 to 300 people but you just don’t get the same interaction as Planet Drum. The thing I like most is you get a real sense of being part of a family, you’re treated as an individual and your needs are always catered for and welcome whether you’re a beginner or at the top of your game.
I would love to be able to play professionally and I practice regularly to turn the dream into reality. I have played in a number of bands since college and I am currently in a folk band.
I have worked with up to three bands at a time - things can get very hectic but I enjoy playing with other musicians, putting in the time rehearsing in the studio and then sharing it with others on stage. I love performing as a drummer and that feeling you get when the crowd go wild at the end of a gig is indescribable!
Hackney Empire with a crowd of 300 people. I have also played a couple of small festivals and playing outside in the summer on a festival stage is an awesome experience!
Practice, practice, practice! Also, listen to as many different types of music as possible, but don’t just listen to the drums, listen to the band as a whole. Attend live gigs and watch and listen to what is going on in the band.
Tough question, I listen to a lot of different music, for me, the music has to groove and make me nod my head or tap my feet. On every album? For me - Jamiroquai.
Another tough question. I like a lot of drummers for different reasons. But I would have to say Derrick McKenzie from Jamiroquai because of the groove he has constantly laid down with the band. I ‘ve seen him live with other bands too and again, his groove has a great feel.
